Insurance verification in Open Dental

How a front desk on Open Dental verifies dental insurance today, and what changes when Stratus does it.

How it works today

In Open Dental (on a server or Open Dental Cloud), the patient's insurance plan and benefits live in the Family module. Many offices run an electronic eligibility check through their clearinghouse where the payer supports it, then fill in the benefit details by hand.

Before the appointment, someone at the front desk confirms the patient's coverage is active, then gets the detail that decides what the patient owes: deductible and how much is met, annual maximum and how much is used, coverage by category, frequencies (how often cleanings, exams and X-rays are covered), waiting periods, missing-tooth clauses and the history of what was already done this year.

Active coverage is the easy part. The detail usually means a payer portal, a fax-back or a phone call to the payer, often on hold, and then typing the answers into the patient's record by hand.

How it works with Stratus

Questions

Does Stratus work with Open Dental?

Yes. Results are written back into your practice management system, including Open Dental, so the breakdown is in the patient's record.

Who makes the calls to the insurance company?

We do. Our AI calls the insurance payer for the practice, and every breakdown is checked by a real person. No phone calls and no portals for the front desk.

What does a breakdown include?

Breakdowns are custom: codes, frequencies, limitations and history.

Will Open Dental warn us when coverage is inactive?

There's an optional alert in Open Dental: when a patient's insurance comes back inactive or not covered, it pops up the moment you open that patient. Your office turns it on in Settings.

How do we try it?

A demo takes about fifteen minutes, and in the demo, Cade runs one of your real patients' verifications live. A free trial is available, with no commitment.

How much time does verification take our front desk now?

The verification cost calculator puts a number on it from your own patients, minutes and hourly cost. It takes about 30 seconds.
